Yes. There is a quote I live by. One specifically, among the hundreds of others that also form the shell of guidance around my life. These were culled from a place outside of the cacophonous opinions, ‘self-help’ systems, influencer mantras, and Dr. Phil sound bites. Honestly, when I come across a public figure or otherwise, proclaiming these sagacious-sounding tidbits, if it’s a video, I replay it multiple times. Then I pause it. I lean in close to the screen and study their face and overall nonverbal cues, attempting to sense whether they have been fortified by their own counsel, or if disbelief accompanied the utterance. In order for me to receive counsel, I need to know that the dispatcher has been flayed open by suffering, like me.
A qualified giver of advice does not waste time with paltry subjects that do not edify. When locked in a primal struggle between life and death, flimsy words will not work. Needlework on the wall in the hallway, bearing the words, ‘Home sweet home’ will fail to comfort. ‘Change brings opportunity’ and myriad other quotes are amorphous clouds without rain. Likewise, when I found myself in the midst of fiery trials, the paperback volumes of prosperity theology from Joel Osteen burned, being dreadfully unable to save themselves or me. No, when I needed a quote, I needed it to be stronger than an M1 Abrams tank and as timeless as ether.
My quote is inglorious like a forgotten penny that has washed down a storm sewer. You will not find it uttered on the lips of those with ultra-high networths. Nor does it compete for ornamentation value with Givenchy, Versace, or Balenciaga upon the bodies of celebrities. It is patently apolitical, and therefore without residence in the White House. Yet, my quote shines as a beacon. Always lighting my path, holding my evasive attention, while defying my indwelling sin. It could be said that I am fettered to my quote. But these are the fetters I would rather have.
A pear is not harvested from an Apple tree. Nor are Oak trees propagated from samaras. Thus, my quote was not taken from Sue, Paul, or Tom. The very lips that need it– my lips, instructed my heart to craft it. Begotten of lowliness, avenging reason upon the head of my own pride, safely making the way for my footfall; the words of my quotidian quote are four: “I am the least.”
