A lens, formerly gray

How important is spirituality in your life?

For many who read this, spirituality is an opaque subject. In order to frame my approach, spirituality to me is understanding the spiritual realm, understanding God, and understanding the spiritual component of ourselves. Without which we cannot hope to fully understand life. Many individuals do not believe that there is a spiritual realm. Because there eyes tell them it is and it ain’t so. Indeed, modern medicine has not settled on the conclusion that there is a spirit for every person, despite having ample evidence to suggest that it is so. My understanding of spirituality went from zilch, to having the direst need of it’s restorative clarity in my life. But first it was all very much gray.

Spirituality is not a subject to be viewed as one being outside of myself. It is myself. It’s given me the series of somber soliloquies – a world within my mind where I am free from prescription drug or otherwise, to be a thinking pariah to my former life. In this world unnatural thoughts – to the carnal man – are incubated into banners of fortifying truth. They yield color from the grey, and grey as color, while giving me understanding of the offenses that originate from my fellow man. I am a lover, I am a feeler. Tinnitus be damned, a symptom of this new spiritual life is the inability to get the music loud enough. Not for drowning or deafening my thought, but for verisimilitude. For feeling. Hammers for the highs, and mourning doves for the troughs; emotive symbolism confirming my alien experiences.

Who else has met Satan in a dream?

Spirituality gave me a deeper understanding of life, and continues to do so. Better than 19 years in my earthly father’s house, I gleaned intimate kernels of truth. Truth that wasn’t afraid to deride my pride by revealing my gargoyled intentions for what they were: debased. The sunny reality outside masked the vacant, bombed out cities within. Haunting edifices I was in no way able to deny. They were me. Acceptance was the key to unlocking the next leg of my spiritual journey. And when I saw it – when I perceived it, I couldn’t ignore it.

Spirituality is a lens into the deepest recesses of humankind. These lenses are not recommended for viewers with weak stomachs or for those who are married to some superficial version of themselves. The only way to navigate spirituality is with truth. The term ‘spirituality’ has been bastardized to mean a hundred different religions or some ennobled airy-fairy journey to being a more well-rounded person. So it obfuscates truth from the very start. Personally, the life-or-death struggle that required me to investigate spirituality scorns the aforesaid shallow motives of the comfortable seekers, and would burn most of the books on the bookshelves of the spirituality category in Barnes & Noble. I have a keen feeling that when many of those authors meet the real God, they will very much be the first in line to incinerate the un-insightful dross by which, through their writings, they have wasted the precious brevity of man’s life.

Also, using a label like ‘spirituality’ is perfidious. There is an urgency in the truest meaning of spirituality. The critical nature of humankind’s separation from God is not reflected in it’s modern usage. Spirituality is not typically used by people who are truly spiritual, it’s used by the tourists. My conversations with the tourists are usually very brief. Mostly because it is unclear if the tourists are really prepared to go far enough.

Spirituality became my life on the eve of it’s very end. I had no choice, but one: to live or die. When I took the path less trodden I found the One who was responsible for repaying every wicked act that is done under the sun. I learned He is real. I came face to face with Him. Perhaps, the eyes that read this, your eyes, treat spirituality like some broad category with undiscernible truth. I was that person once. It is not now my responsibility to bring you to God. I can only present to you what I have found. The help of man is useless. God is real.

The word spirituality has certain whiffs of promise, as though we could learn something higher than ourselves. We blink and find we have landed in a gutter. Mainly because in one word Truth is taken and seated next to all of the other doctrines of demons. If you are human, most if not all of what you have heard of God is utter misrepresentation – fallacy. Yet it is still labelled as spirituality. Formerly the lens was gray, but no more. So yea, spirituality is a label, but Jesus is important.
