An expiration of acculturation

By

What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?

Culture is the vulture feeding on the carrion of dead individuality.

Traditions-

Norms-

Identity-

Corporate identity-

In my case, family said, “This is who you are. Your grandfather did this… Your great grandfather was this…” The volumes of those stories brought me ever closer to never knowing myself. But when I cranked the volume knob down on all that noise: silence. Then, I heard myself. And this is what he said.

I don’t want to be your Anglo-Saxon-

I don’t want to be your white-

I don’t want to be their Greenwood-

I don’t want to be your American-

I don’t want to be your known quantity-

I’m not a slave to your ways-

I’m not your labels-

I’m not their Christian-

I’m not representative of their safety-

I’m a danger to their doctrine, fore I have given no quarter to fear.

I’m not their proud

But in the quiet I am loud. And I shall never again allow them to enter the sanctum of my identity to install budget trinkets and doilies; so that they could have orientation.

Culture is a pillar to some

That veneer, for me, was taken in a flood long ago.
